How many ADA porta potties does an event need?

An event needs at least one wheelchair-accessible porta potty in each restroom cluster, and at least 5% of the units in that cluster. Under the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2, a cluster of 20 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 to 40 units needs 2. This is the legal minimum.

Minimums follow 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Confirm the requirement with your venue or permit office.
Units in the clusterAccessible units required (5%, min. 1)Our recommendation
1–2011, placed closest to parking
21–4022, one at each end of the row
41–6033 or more if many older guests attend

Read the rule at the U.S. Department of Justice 2010 ADA Standards. An accessible toilet room needs a 60-inch diameter turning circle or a T-shaped turning space (§304.3). If your permit asks for proof that a unit meets a specific section, call us before you book, and we will send the manufacturer sheet.

Where should an accessible porta potty be placed?

An accessible porta potty should sit on firm, level ground with a smooth path to it. Grass is fine when it is dry and short. Gravel, mud and slopes stop wheelchairs. Place the unit closest to parking or the main walkway, with the door opening onto a flat landing at least 60 inches deep.

  • Use plywood or mats over soft lawn after rain.
  • Do not put the unit behind a curb or on a slope.
  • Keep cables and hoses off the path.
  • Light the path for evening events.

Wheelchair-accessible unit questions

Here are straight answers to the {'wheelchair-accessible unit'} questions people ask before they book. Every answer starts with the short version, then the conditions that change it. If your site, dates or head count differ, call (803) 343-9386 and Jesse's team will tell you what works for your job.

Is your accessible unit ADA compliant?

We call it wheelchair-accessible, because that is how the manufacturer describes it. Whether a setup meets the ADA depends on the whole site, including the path, the landing and the number of units. Confirm your requirements with your venue or permit office.

How much does a wheelchair-accessible porta potty cost?

An accessible unit starts at $195 per event, or $185 per 28 days with weekly service on a jobsite. Delivery and pickup are listed on the quote.

Can I rent just one accessible unit for a family member at home?

Yes. Families rent one for a relative who uses a walker or wheelchair during a remodel, a reunion or home care. We set it on the flattest spot near the door.

Do jobsites need an accessible porta potty?

OSHA does not set an accessible-unit count for construction crews. Some owners and public projects ask for one. If a crew member needs more room, an accessible unit is a simple fix.

Will the accessible unit fit in my driveway?

It needs a spot about 6 feet by 6 feet plus a 5-foot landing in front of the door. Most driveways have room. Gates must be at least 66 inches wide to roll it through.

Do you have an accessible hand washing station?

Our hand washing stations are free-standing. For wheelchair users, place a station with a clear approach space in front. Ask us and we will set it at the end of the row with the most room.
